January 30, 2014 Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa had snow down to 10, 500 feet. After waiting several hours for the crews to clear the road, had a fun ski with several hundred excited twentysomething snowboarders. They brought rails, made kickers, guitars, couches. Locals loaded pickups with snow to bring home.
The snow was soft wet powder and skiied fairly well. The sun only came out for a few minutes and the light was flat. There was no wind and it was warm enough for just a light shell. Here’s the movie with Gabby Pahinui playing, “Mauna Loa” which I though was an appropriate tune.
